Disney Cruise Line Moves Up Fleet Expansion Timeline, Targets Completion a Year Early
Disney Cruise Line has revised the delivery schedule for several of its upcoming ships, bringing forward two next-generation vessels to 2029 and a third to late 2030, in an update shared during The Walt Disney Company's third-quarter earnings call on 5 August 2026.
What's changed
Disney Cruise Line has been working toward a long-stated goal of nearly doubling its fleet to 13 ships by 2031, up from just five vessels as recently as 2024. Three new ships have already entered service on that timeline: Disney Treasure in December 2024, Disney Destiny in November 2025, and Disney Adventure in March 2026.
Of the ships still to come, the line's 12th vessel — previously pencilled in for a 2030 debut — has now been moved up to late 2029. Its 13th ship, originally expected in 2031, is now targeted for late 2030. Together, the changes would let Disney Cruise Line finish its fleet expansion a full year ahead of the original schedule.
Disney Believe, currently under construction at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, remains on track for a late 2027 debut, unaffected by the accelerated timeline. Disney also confirmed that a fourth Wish-class ship, being developed in partnership with Tokyo Disney's Oriental Land Company for the Japanese market, is still set for a 2029 departure, despite earlier speculation from Oriental Land Company in March suggesting it could arrive as soon as 2028.
The numbers behind the decision
The timeline shift came alongside broadly positive financial results for the cruise line. In its shareholder letter, Disney said fiscal third-quarter performance had been strong, noting that this was the first full quarter with both of its newest ships, Disney Destiny and Disney Adventure, in service. Together, the two ships lifted stateroom capacity by roughly 50% compared with the same quarter a year earlier, and the company said it remained encouraged by current occupancy levels and forward bookings.
The wider Walt Disney Company also reported 4% global guest growth across its experiences division, which includes the cruise line alongside its theme parks, in the quarter ending 27 June 2026.
What comes next
No bookings or detailed itinerary information have yet been released for the fourth Wish-class ship, though Disney has indicated further information will follow in October 2026. Details on the fifth Wish-class vessel, the 13th ship overall, have not yet been disclosed either.
The accelerated schedule reflects a broader pattern across the cruise industry of major operators leaning into fleet growth to meet strong demand, though it also raises the operational challenge of absorbing new, large ships into service at a faster pace than originally planned.
