Eight Michelin-starred chefs bringing fine dining to cruise ships

From Daniel Boulud and Arnaud Lallement to Michel Roux and Marco Pierre White, leading chefs with Michelin-starred backgrounds are creating restaurants, menus and special dining experiences at sea.

Cruise-ship dining has travelled a considerable distance from the days when the buffet was the main attraction. Some of the world’s most respected chefs now create restaurants, tasting menus and special culinary experiences for passengers at sea.

Celebrity Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Cunard, P&O Cruises, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises and The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection all currently work with chefs whose restaurants hold—or previously held—Michelin stars.

There is, however, an important distinction. Michelin awards its stars to individual restaurants rather than to chefs, and the onboard venues described below have not themselves been awarded Michelin stars. The chefs bring experience gained in starred kitchens, but that does not transfer the restaurant’s award to the ship.

Daniel Boulud — Celebrity Cruises

French chef and restaurateur Daniel Boulud is Celebrity Cruises’ Global Culinary Ambassador and the creator of Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud aboard Celebrity Beyond.

Travel provides the inspiration for the restaurant’s menu, with dishes drawing on flavours and ingredients encountered around the world. Boulud has also designed dishes for Luminae, Celebrity’s private restaurant for Retreat guests, and a five-course Chef’s Table experience.

Boulud’s restaurants have received multiple Michelin awards, with his flagship restaurant Daniel and New York’s Café Boulud among those recognised by the guide.

Arnaud Lallement — Disney Cruise Line

Arnaud Lallement, chef at the three-Michelin-starred L’Assiette Champenoise near Reims, has created some of Disney Cruise Line’s most ambitious adult-only dining.

He is behind Enchanté aboard Disney Wish, Disney Treasure and Disney Destiny. The Beauty and the Beast-inspired venue combines modern French cuisine with an elegant dining room and expansive sea views.

Lallement also worked with chef Scott Hunnel to create Remy aboard Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. Disney accurately calls Remy a Michelin-inspired experience rather than claiming that the restaurant itself holds a star.

Sven Elverfeld — The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

German chef Sven Elverfeld is closely associated with Aqua, the three-Michelin-starred restaurant at The Ritz-Carlton in Wolfsburg.

He created S.E.A. aboard Evrima, the first yacht in The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. The intimate speciality venue offers a European tasting-menu experience shaped by the precision and contemporary interpretations for which Elverfeld became known on land.

The yacht company describes it as Michelin-star-inspired dining—a careful and accurate distinction from an officially starred restaurant.

Kevin Fehling — Hapag-Lloyd Cruises

Kevin Fehling, chef of the three-star restaurant The Table in Hamburg, created The Globe by Kevin Fehling aboard Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ MS Europa.

The restaurant opened in 2019 and takes inspiration from international markets, ingredients and destinations. Fehling does more than lend his name to the venue: he visits the ship, introduces new dishes and trains its culinary team.

When he is not aboard, the ship’s resident chefs continue serving menus created around his style and ideas. Dining at The Globe is included in the cruise fare.

Michel Roux — Cunard

Michel Roux has developed menus for Queen Anne and hosts Cunard’s popular Le Gavroche at Sea residencies.

Le Gavroche held two Michelin stars before its London dining room closed in January 2024. Its name and culinary heritage now continue at sea through limited dining experiences hosted by Roux.

Four Le Gavroche at Sea residencies are scheduled aboard Queen Anne during 2026, including Norwegian Fjords, Iceland and British Isles voyages. Each residency offers a five-course menu for a limited number of guests, accompanied by cooking demonstrations and appearances from Roux.

He has also worked with Cunard’s development chefs on Queen Anne’s Queens Grill gala menu and food served in the Golden Lion pub.

Marco Pierre White — P&O Cruises

Marco Pierre White remains one of P&O Cruises’ best-known Food Heroes. His five-course Celebration Night menus are served across the fleet, while Ocean Grill aboard Arcadia reflects his approach to relaxed speciality dining.

White became the youngest chef of his era to receive three Michelin stars but later returned them. It is therefore more accurate to describe him as a former three-star chef rather than the current operator of a three-star restaurant.

During selected 2026 Food Hero cruises, White is also due to appear personally for cooking demonstrations, hosted activities and conversations with passengers.

Fabio Trabocchi — The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

Italian-born chef Fabio Trabocchi created Seta su Ilma, an intimate Italian speciality restaurant aboard Ritz-Carlton yacht Ilma, with the concept also appearing aboard Luminara.

Its tasting menus concentrate on handmade pasta, seafood, prime cuts, seasonal ingredients and Italian wines. Trabocchi’s Washington restaurant Fiola has a Michelin-starred history, and the yacht partnership translates his modern interpretation of Italian coastal cooking into a dining experience at sea.

Michael Mina — The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

Chef and restaurateur Michael Mina developed the menu for Beach House aboard Ilma, bringing together the fire-led flavours of South and Central America with ingredients and influences from the Caribbean.

The restaurant is more relaxed than a formal tasting-menu venue, demonstrating that a chef with Michelin recognition does not have to reproduce a traditional fine-dining room at sea. Mina has also shaped the Middle Eastern-inspired Beach House menu aboard Luminara.

Are these restaurants Michelin-starred?

No. Michelin explicitly states that stars are awarded to restaurants, not chefs. A chef’s involvement does not allow an onboard restaurant to inherit the award held by a venue on land.

The most accurate descriptions are therefore “created by a Michelin-starred chef”, “a menu designed by a Michelin-starred chef” or “Michelin-star-inspired dining”. Calling an ocean-going cruise restaurant Michelin-starred would be misleading unless Michelin had inspected and awarded that particular venue.

There is a rare floating exception in Paris: Don Juan II, a dining boat operating on the River Seine, holds one Michelin star. Its defined local operation allows it to be assessed as part of Michelin’s French restaurant guide. No conventional ocean-going cruise-ship restaurant is currently known to hold a Michelin star.

Does a famous name guarantee an exceptional meal?

The chef’s involvement matters, but so does execution aboard the ship. Ingredients must be sourced across changing ports, dishes reproduced during long voyages and standards maintained by an onboard team while the celebrity chef is elsewhere.

The strongest partnerships extend beyond licensing a famous name. They involve menu development, training, repeat visits and a continuing relationship with the ship’s chefs. Kevin Fehling’s work aboard MS Europa and Daniel Boulud’s wider role with Celebrity are good examples.

For passengers, the real test remains the meal placed in front of them. A Michelin-starred connection sets an expectation; the onboard kitchen and service team must turn it into a memorable evening at sea.
