The crew of MSC Musica reportedly rescued eight people from a small boat in difficulty approximately 16 nautical miles east of Ibiza.
The operation took place shortly before 11.30am on Friday 31 July 2026, while the MSC Cruises ship was sailing in the waters near the Spanish island.
According to an account published by Italian newspaper Il Dispari, the cruise ship identified a small fibreglass craft fitted with an outboard motor and carrying eight people. After assessing the situation, MSC Musica's captain ordered a rescue boat to be launched.
MSC Musica rescue boat deployed
First officer Roberto De Girolamo, aged 27, reportedly took charge of the rescue boat alongside other members of the ship's crew.
The team approached the smaller craft and transferred its eight occupants to safety. The rescued people were subsequently placed in the care of Spanish rescue personnel and the relevant authorities.
The report, citing information attributed to Spain's Government Delegation, said Salvamento Marítimo and officers from the Guardia Civil station at Sant Josep were involved in the response.
The eight people were described in the Italian report as young men of North African origin. Their precise nationalities and medical condition have not been publicly confirmed.
Duty to assist people in distress
Vessels at sea have a longstanding obligation to help people in distress when they are able to do so safely. The International Maritime Organization says the SOLAS Convention includes a general obligation for ship masters to proceed to the assistance of those in distress.
Cruise ships may therefore need to alter course or interrupt their schedules when another vessel or its occupants require urgent help. Their rescue boats, trained crews and onboard medical facilities can make them important assets during maritime emergencies.
No separate public statement from MSC Cruises confirming the full details of the incident had been located by Deck7 at the time of publication. The account has therefore been attributed to the published reports and the official information they cite.
