Naples

Naples doesn't do quiet arrivals. Ships sail into the Gulf of Naples with Mount Vesuvius looming over the skyline, dock practically in the middle of the historic centre, and deposit passengers straight into one of the noisiest, most vividly alive cities in the Mediterranean. It's not a place that eases you in gently — but for exactly that reason, it tends to be one of the ports people talk about longest afterwards.

Dock
Naples' cruise terminal, the Stazione Marittima, sits right in the heart of the city near Piazza Municipio, and passengers can reach several major landmarks on foot straight off the ship. The first is usually Castel Nuovo, a hulking 13th-century fortress built between 1279 and 1284 for Charles I of Anjou, with five stone towers and a striking Renaissance triumphal arch worked into its gatehouse. It served for centuries as a royal residence for the kings of Naples, Aragon and Spain, and today holds a civic museum.
