Portsmouth

Portsmouth International Port is a growing UK turnaround and call port serving boutique, luxury, expedition and medium-sized cruise ships. Its modern terminal can support vessels up to approximately 300 metres, while Portsmouth & Southsea station is around five minutes away by taxi. The Historic Dockyard and Gunwharf waterfront require an onward transfer.

Dock

Portsmouth International Port is a growing cruise gateway on England's south coast and an established departure point for no-fly voyages. The council-owned port combines cruise operations with international ferry services, freight and commercial shipping.

Its sheltered harbour and direct M275 connection make Portsmouth practical for turnaround calls, while the city's naval history and waterfront attractions provide a strong destination for visiting passengers.

Where cruise ships dock in Portsmouth

Cruise ships berth alongside at Portsmouth International Port, George Byng Way, Portsmouth PO2 8SP. This is north of the central Portsmouth Harbour and Gunwharf waterfront and should not be confused with Portsmouth Harbour railway station or the nearby Historic Dockyard entrance.

The assigned berth and passenger route depend on the day's ferry, cruise and commercial schedule. Travellers should follow the cruise line's check-in instructions and port signage rather than selecting a generic Portsmouth waterfront destination in a mapping application.

The cruise terminal

A major passenger-terminal extension opened in 2023 to support Portsmouth's expanding cruise operation. Together with a longer berth, the investment allows the port to receive cruise ships up to approximately 300 metres long.

The modern extension includes dedicated passenger-processing facilities, a lounge, an outdoor sky garden and a covered connection with the existing terminal. The wider passenger building offers toilets, accessible facilities, a café, convenience shop, free Wi-Fi, baby changing, a water-refill point, first-aid provision and defibrillators.

Paid left luggage is available to passengers holding a valid travel ticket, but bags cannot be stored overnight. Opening hours, charges and availability should be checked directly with the port before relying on the service.

Getting to Portsmouth International Port

Portsmouth & Southsea is the nearest principal railway station. The port states that the terminal is around five minutes away by taxi or approximately 20 minutes on foot. A taxi rank is located outside the station, and another operates outside the main passenger terminal.

Direct rail services connect Portsmouth with London Waterloo, London Victoria, Brighton, Gatwick Airport, Southampton, Eastleigh and cities farther west. Passengers should confirm engineering work and allow time for a taxi, port security and cruise check-in.

National Express coaches call at the port, while local First Bus and Stagecoach services serve the surrounding area. Walking is possible from Portsmouth & Southsea station using designated pedestrian routes, but passengers carrying cruise luggage may prefer a taxi.

Driving and parking

The M275 leads directly towards Portsmouth International Port. Drivers should use postcode PO2 8SP and follow the sailing and operator signs once inside the port estate.

A 24-hour long-stay multi-storey car park stands a few minutes' walk from the terminal and can be reserved in advance. Short-stay bays outside the terminal are intended for collection and drop-off. Portsmouth Park & Ride serves a stop near Rudmore roundabout for day visitors, but overnight parking is not permitted there and it is not a substitute for cruise parking.

Getting to the city and waterfront

Commercial Road and the Guildhall area form the nearest central shopping and civic district. Portsmouth's best-known visitor attractions lie farther south around the Historic Dockyard and Gunwharf Quays, so a local bus, taxi or cruise-line transfer is normally more convenient than walking from the international port.

Passengers should check whether their cruise line provides a port-of-call shuttle and where it stops. Shuttle availability, accessibility and fares can differ between ships and should not be assumed.

What to see during a Portsmouth port call

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is home to HMS Victory, the Mary Rose Museum, HMS Warrior and other naval collections. Nearby Gunwharf Quays combines shops, restaurants and harbour views beneath the Spinnaker Tower.

Other options include Southsea seafront, Portsmouth Museum and Art Gallery, Charles Dickens' Birthplace Museum, Southsea Castle and the D-Day Story. Visitors planning several attractions should account for travel between the international port, Historic Dockyard and Southsea rather than treating them as one compact terminal district.

Longer excursions may visit Winchester, Chichester, the South Downs or attractions elsewhere in Hampshire and West Sussex. Independent travellers must protect the ship's stated all-aboard time and allow for congestion around the M275 and harbour approaches.

Accessibility and assisted travel

Passengers requiring help should notify their cruise company before travel. The operator passes the assistance request to the port, allowing staff to arrange appropriate support through check-in and towards the vessel.

The port provides accessible toilets, designated parking and a specialist minibus for wheelchair users and passengers with reduced mobility. Terminal lifts support access between floors. The final gangway gradient and boarding route depend on the ship and tide, so wheelchair and mobility-scooter users should confirm that complete arrangement in advance.

Shore power and sustainability

Portsmouth International Port's Sea Change shore-power system went live in July 2026. It serves three of the port's busiest berths and allows compatible ferries and cruise ships to use shoreside electricity instead of running onboard engines while berthed.

The ability of an individual ship to connect depends on its equipment and berth allocation. Shore-power availability at the port should therefore not be interpreted as confirmation that every visiting cruise ship will plug in.

Terminal information

Cruise ships use Portsmouth International Port at George Byng Way, Portsmouth PO2 8SP. The council-owned port handles cruise, ferry and freight traffic through a shared secure estate. A sustainable passenger-terminal extension opened in 2023, adding dedicated cruise-processing space, a passenger lounge, an outdoor sky garden and a covered link with the existing terminal. Facilities include seating, toilets, accessible toilets, café and shop services, free Wi-Fi, baby changing, water refill, first aid and same-day paid left luggage for ticketed passengers. Opening and processing arrangements depend on the ship and sailing.

Docking and tender information

Cruise ships berth alongside within Portsmouth International Port. Following a berth extension and the opening of the new terminal facilities, the port states that it can handle ships up to approximately 300 metres long. The exact berth, gangway and internal passenger route are allocated operationally because cruise vessels share the port with international ferries and commercial traffic. Portsmouth's Sea Change shore-power system went live in July 2026 across three busy berths, allowing suitably equipped ferries and cruise ships to connect to shoreside electricity and switch off their engines while alongside.

Getting around

Portsmouth International Port is reached directly from the M275 and has a 24-hour long-stay multi-storey car park a few minutes' walk from the terminal, together with short-stay drop-off bays. Direct trains serve Portsmouth & Southsea from London Waterloo, London Victoria, Brighton, Gatwick Airport, Southampton and other regional stations; a taxi rank is outside the station. National Express coaches stop at the port, while First Bus and Stagecoach operate local services nearby. A taxi rank is provided outside the main terminal. Day visitors can use Portsmouth Park & Ride and alight near Rudmore roundabout, but vehicles cannot be left there overnight.

Accessibility

Passengers requiring assistance must arrange it with their cruise company before travel so that the port team receives the necessary details. Portsmouth International Port provides accessible toilets, designated parking spaces and bays near the terminal. A specialist minibus can assist wheelchair users and passengers with reduced mobility between the terminal and ship. Lifts serve the terminal facilities, but gangway access and gradients remain dependent on the vessel and tide. Passengers using a wheelchair, mobility scooter or other large equipment should confirm the ship-specific boarding method in advance.
