Viking Libra is a 54,300gt ocean cruise ship being built for Viking at Fincantieri's Ancona shipyard in Italy. The vessel was floated out on 19 March 2026 and is scheduled for delivery in November 2026.
Viking and Fincantieri describe the ship as the world's first cruise vessel powered by hydrogen stored aboard for both propulsion and onboard electricity generation. It combines liquid-hydrogen fuel cells with a hybrid propulsion arrangement capable of delivering up to six megawatts of power.
Size, capacity and accommodation
Viking Libra measures approximately 239 metres in length and 30.8 metres across the beam. Its gross tonnage is approximately 54,300, making it slightly larger than Viking's original 930-guest ocean ships.
The ship has 499 staterooms accommodating up to 998 guests. Viking describes it as an all-veranda vessel, meaning every passenger stateroom has private outdoor space.
Accommodation ranges from Veranda and Deluxe Veranda staterooms to Penthouse Veranda categories, Penthouse Junior Suites, Explorer Suites and the multi-room Owner's Suite. Viking's published deck plan places passenger accommodation across six decks.
The official accommodation listing identifies two wheelchair-accessible Penthouse Junior Suites, numbers 6020 and 6021. This is the minimum confirmed accessible-cabin count and should be checked again when the final ship particulars are released.
Liquid hydrogen and fuel cells
Viking Libra has been designed with a power and propulsion system based partly on liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells. Fincantieri subsidiary Isotta Fraschini Motori is enabling the advanced fuel-cell installation.
Viking says the system can produce up to six megawatts of power and will allow the vessel to navigate and operate with zero emissions for limited periods. This is intended to support access to environmentally sensitive destinations where tighter emissions restrictions apply.
The description does not mean that every voyage will be completed solely on hydrogen. Viking calls the arrangement a hybrid propulsion system, while its published wording says the system is based partially on liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells. Deck7 therefore records the conventional side of the installation cautiously until full engine and bunker specifications are published.
Viking Astrea, due in 2027, is the second Viking ship scheduled to use the same broad hydrogen concept.
Onboard experience
The ship follows Viking's familiar adults-only, destination-focused approach and modern Scandinavian design. Published facilities include the Explorers' Lounge, The Living Room, Wintergarden, The Nordic Spa, a main pool beneath a retractable roof and an aft infinity pool.
Dining venues include The Restaurant, World Café, Manfredi's Italian Restaurant, The Chef's Table, Mamsen's and the Aquavit Terrace. Viking ocean ships do not have casinos and place greater emphasis on cultural enrichment, lectures and time ashore than large-scale resort attractions.
Other established Viking features include the theatre, cinema spaces, a sports deck, library areas and indoor and outdoor lounges. Final venue arrangements should nevertheless be checked after delivery because the ship remains in its outfitting phase.
Construction and float-out
The keel-laying ceremony took place at Fincantieri's Ancona yard on 9 September 2025. The ship was floated out on 19 March 2026, beginning a two-day process that moved the vessel from the building dock towards final outfitting and interior completion.
The permanent IMO number associated with the vessel is 9852468 and independent ship references identify the construction number as 6332. Final flag, port of registry, call sign and operational MMSI were not consistently confirmed in the official material reviewed by Deck7, so those fields remain open pending delivery.
Planned inaugural deployment
Viking says Viking Libra will join the fleet in November 2026 and spend its inaugural season operating itineraries in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
The line's current ship page lists programmes including Iconic Western Mediterranean, Venice, the Adriatic & Greece, Journey to Antiquities, Ancient Mediterranean Treasures, Mediterranean Odyssey and Greek Odyssey.
Third-party schedules show bookable departures from early December 2026, but Viking had not clearly labelled a specific voyage as the official maiden sailing in the material reviewed. The maiden-voyage field therefore remains unconfirmed until the cruise line announces the delivery and first passenger departure.
As a pre-delivery record, technical specifications, registry information and operating dates may change. Deck7 will review the entry again after the vessel is handed over in November 2026.
